Friendswood Library Nears End of September Improvement Work
New mobile shelving and other facility improvements have temporarily changed hours and access, with two full closure days still ahead this week.

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Public Library is entering the final days of a three-week period of reduced access as crews complete new shelving and other improvements inside the building.
Since shortly after Labor Day, the library has been operating under modified hours while new mobile shelving is installed and facility maintenance, staff training and preparations for this weekend's Friends of the Library Gala take place.
The temporary schedule remains in effect through September 26.
- September 23: Limited services, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- September 24: Limited services, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- September 25: Library closed
- September 26: Library closed
- Drive-through and front-desk services remain available during the limited-access period
- Digital library resources remain available around the clock
New mobile shelving is part of the project
One of the most visible changes underway inside the building is the installation of new mobile shelving.
The library has not described the project simply as a shelving replacement. The September work period also includes general facility maintenance and updates, staff training and preparations for the annual Friends of the Library Gala.
Those projects have required much of the building to remain inaccessible during portions of the month.
Some services remain available
Although access inside the library has been limited, patrons have not been completely cut off from library services.
The library says residents can continue using the drive-through and front desk for account assistance and to pick up materials placed on hold.
Digital resources also remain available 24 hours a day, providing access to electronic books, audiobooks and other online library services even while portions of the building are unavailable.
The library has also encouraged residents to use its new book vending machine at City Hall during the improvement period.
Full closure Friday and Saturday
The library is scheduled to close completely on Friday, September 25, and Saturday, September 26.
Those closures coincide with preparations for and hosting of the Friendswood Public Library Gala.
The annual fundraiser is being held Saturday evening and benefits Friends of the Library programs, including the Gale High School scholarship program and plans for a new library marquee.
The gala closure is also listed on the library's official 2026 holiday and closure schedule.
A busier October calendar follows
Once the September improvement window ends, the library's event calendar begins filling up again quickly.
Upcoming programs include an Adult ESL Conversation Class on September 30, the Regency Book Club on October 1 and a watercolor workshop on October 3.
Children's programs, teen activities, book clubs and community events are also scheduled throughout October.
Check before visiting
The library's regular published schedule is Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the library closed Sundays.
Because the September improvement period is still underway, residents should check the library's website for any last-minute service or access updates before visiting this week.
For a community institution used daily for books, computers, meetings, children's activities and study space, the temporary inconvenience has been noticeable. But the current schedule indicates Friendswood's library is nearing the end of a concentrated month of upgrades before its fall programming calendar resumes.
